What can I expect from a session?

I remember feeling very anxious the first time I went to see a therapist, worried about whether my thoughts or feelings would be judged and not wanting to open up to a stranger. Something I like to remind clients of is that the time is theirs! While sessions will usually be between 45 and 55 minutes depending on subject, the way we spend that time is ultimately up to you. Any changes in session length beyond what is outlined above should be discussed prior to session.

Counseling starts with the intake process, which will consist of a series of digital forms and evaluations as well as our first telehealth session. During intake we will review the ethics and guidelines that help us define the boundaries of our unique counseling relationship. I believe consent is key, and want you to feel informed about the work we will be doing together. Beyond that, intake is a collaborative process where we explore domains of your background and health history while defining what YOU want out of counseling. The following sessions will take a variety of forms and are adaptable to you as I learn more about you and your unique qualities.

Sometimes we might be reviewing psychoeducation material together to better understand the work we will do and how it is relevant to you. Other times, you might just need a space to decompress and be heard. No matter where you find yourself when joining a session, I will try to tailor the space to your presenting needs. I will join you from my home office space (pictures coming soon!) at the start of each session, and request you be in your home or another secure and private location for the duration of our session. I encourage clients to bring snacks/water, pets, stuffed animals, and any other items they may find helpful during sessions.

Frequency and Duration

I prefer to work with clients weekly, especially at the beginning of our relationship, as this helps me get to know you. That said, I also allow for every other week and ad hoc frequency for established clients for whom that level of care is appropriate. The average length of time I work with clients varies and is specific to each individual’s needs. We will periodically check-in about how our counseling relationship is working out and make mutually agreed upon adjustments as needed.

Client Focus

I work with adults and adolescents aged 13+. My clients are primarily those identifying as gay, queer, transgender, gender non-confirming, and those of a minority romantic or sexual identity. I believe counseling should be a safe space for people of all ages, races, ethnicity, orientations, attractions, expressions, abilities, and identities. This includes….

  • Gender identity/transition/letters of support

  • PTSD & Complex PTSD

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Diverse sexualities and orientations

  • Relationship and familial issues

  • Sucidial Ideation/Suicide Suriviors

  • Self-harm

  • Substance use

  • Self concept, understanding, self-esteem

Theory of Care

I practice from an eclectic lens utilizing components of narrative therapy, psycho-analysis, feminist therapy, bibliotherapy, and queer theory. In practice, this means that I am focused on helping you better understand your motivations and responses to your environment while creating space for you to tell the beautiful story that is your life’s journey. Queer, feminist, and trauma-informed describe the lenses we will use to help explore and create a framework of understanding for your experiences. I believe de-colonization of therapy is essential and consider my clients the ultimate authority of their experience.  I am a HAES informed clinician. I believe harm reduction is the most humane approach to substance use treatment.

Practice of Care

Outside of sessions, bibliotherapy might often look like reading an article or part of a book we will later review and analyze together in session. Occasionally,  Some clients identify this element of therapy as ‘homework’. I always strive to provide personalized context for any material we review together or that I encourage you to seek out.
